The following is part of an ongoing series of thought leadership contributions from BuildIngReports' network of over 900 Service Members during the COVID-19 pandemic. In healthcare, technology issues and communication problems can lead to more than an inconvenience or a slight business interruption. They can lead to treatment delays, medication errors, falls, or even sentinel events (unanticipated incidents resulting in death or serious physical or psychological damage).
Sentinel events can be debilitating to patients, families, and care providers. In addition to their health and emotional impacts, the financial effects can be devastating as well. But there’s good news: Many times, they can be prevented. According to 2018 data from The Joint Commission, more than 11% of sentinel events can be connected to communication errors.
BuildingReports is pleased to announce several updates that went live this week, many of which were requested by our network of over 900 Service Members. Unlike a full ScanSeries release, the updates reflected below to the mobile application will take effect once a building has been downloaded to a mobile device. These do not require an update to a new version via your service provider's app store.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The ScanSeries update includes the addition of Disinfected Surface Device Types for helping organizations track and record sanitization efforts as part of COVID-19, and beyond.
Here is a summary of the new devices - and updates to existing devices - coming to ScanSeries soon. BuildingReports always recommends keeping your application up to date with the latest version to ensure you have the latest features and functionality, and to keep current with changes to your device's operating system. However, due to the nature of this update you will see the changes automatically with no app store update required.
BuildingReports has released a few other updates in addition to two aforementioned feature launches. ScanSeries for iOS (v2.27.68) included several improvements and enhancements, and you may have already noticed some changes to the web portal user interface as well. The next update for ScanSeries for Android will be announced later this year.
As August 13th draws closer, U.S. federal agencies are still attempting to comply with Congress’s ban passed last year which takes effect on that date. Recently, two prominent security camera manufacturers have been identified as having vulnerabilities that can allow unauthorized parties to gain administrative access over the devices. Other manufacturers and devices are also named in the US Department of Homeland Security's Industrial Control Systems Cyber Emergency Response Team advisory and subsequent legislation that effectively banned their use by Federal agencies on that date:

If you are an iOS user, you're likely aware of the challenges presented by the latest operating system updates from Apple related to version 11 intended to support their new iPhone 8 and X devices. As issues are identified in ScanSeries for iOS, our team is working hard to keep pace with new ScanSeries releases to address the problems presented in each new operating system update. In addition, SecurityScan users will notice new schema updates requested by members for financial institution facilities.
